关于更新字段的问题

Question

字段名为activation   varchar型 20长度
默认为<NULL>
我在程序里要这样更新它
update table set activation = activation + 'a1' where username='test'
但是当字段为<NULL>时怎么也更新不了，如国不为<NULL>时执行这段代码又是正确的！
请问大家我该怎么解决呢！
